What you need
Entry Requirements
Academic
- A recognised secondary-school certificate
- Academic transcripts
- A valid passport
- Proof of English or Chinese proficiency
- Personal statement or study plan
- Physical examination form
- Police or non-criminal record certificate
- Financial guarantee or proof of funds
- Guardianship documents if under 18
Some universities now require undergraduate applicants to take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment, or CSCA. The required subjects can depend on the programme, so students must check the university's current admission notice.
Language
Language Requirement
For Chinese-taught programmes, universities commonly request an HSK certificate. Requirements frequently range from HSK Level 4 to Level 6, depending on the institution and course.
For English-taught programmes, students may need IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted certificate. Indicative requirements often fall around:
- IELTS 5.5 – 6.5
- TOEFL iBT 70 – 90
Requirements are university-specific. Some institutions may accept an official English-medium instruction certificate, while others insist on a recognised test result.
Visa route
Student Visa Process
China has two principal student-visa categories:
- X1 visa: for studies lasting more than 180 days
- X2 visa: for studies lasting no more than 180 days
Students entering with an X1 visa must normally apply for a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. Visa documents generally include the passport, admission notice and the required study-in-China confirmation documentation. Exact requirements should always be confirmed with the Chinese embassy or visa centre responsible for the applicant's country of residence.
