International students that have got a diploma from certain countries with 12 years of studies may have to do a foundation.
Should I go to a public or private university?
It all depends on your academic and language qualification. To go to a private university, you must have German qualification to the level of minimum B2 and also pass the entry exam to the university. It might take 10-16 months to achieve B2 or C1. For medicine, you should only consider the public universities. For other courses, you should consider how quickly you want to achieve your first degree and get to your first professional job. Sometimes, it is better to do a bachelor's degree at a private university and go to public for masters. If you already have German qualifications, you should consider the public university.
