Course Description :

Whitgift School is amongst the top 10 schools for the International Baccalaureate in the world, with an average points score of 40/45 in 2020.  Designed exclusively by Whitgift's Director of IB, this is the ultimate online course to prepare students for their first year as an IB student.  Students aged between 14-16 from around the world and the UK are invited to apply. Candidates will have a short interview before being offered a place on the course.

On this three-week course, and under the guidance and tutorship of experienced IB teachers, students study English Language & Acquisition, Maths & Statistics and Integrated Science. Students also are exposed to the CAS and TOK elements of the IB which are embedded into each subject. By developing their knowledge of the IB programme, students have the opportunity to improve their study habits, academic ability, critical thinking and interpersonal skills. This is not only crucial for a smooth transition into the first year of the IBDP, but also their general future academic success. We wish for students to complete this course feeling emboldened, inquisitive, reflective, balanced, open-minded, and ultimately with a passion for learning, ready to achieve beyond what they thought was possible.

More broadly speaking, our course has been designed with the IB leaner profile in mind. Students are expected to work as collaboratively as possible,  through break out rooms and in-class discussions and are also encouraged to attend the weekly academic IB enrichment seminar.

Each week, we will send parents a detailed  update on their son or daughter's progress and at the end of the course we will provide students with a detailed report on the areas that need to be focused on in the coming year.

Week 1:

English Language & Literature
One requirement of the Diploma is that at least one subject from studies is in language and literature. On the  online Pre-IB course at Whitgift, students will be focusing on English Language & Literature.

During your first week with us, you will be introduced to the critical study and interpretation of both written and spoken texts in English from various literary forms as well as non-literary texts. You will learn, through formal analysis, that meaning is not necessarily fixed, but can vary and indeed change over time.

You will explore English through the prism of its cultural development and how it works in the media and literature. The skills of literary and textual analysis as well as the ability to explain ideas clearly are looked at in this first week with the overarching aim being that students begin to develop the techniques required  for considering the reader’s response to a text as well as mechanisms to communicate this effectively.

Week 2:

Mathematics
All students take a Mathematics course, so it is vital students are prepared – whatever their prior level.

During your second week, you will develop your mathematical knowledge with understanding of concepts and principles, and you will look at deepening your logical, critical, and creative thinking as well as cultivating your aptitude in abstraction and generalization.

A look at the historical and international aspects of mathematics will be undertaken as well as sessions in how to use graphic display calculators. You’ll leave Whitgift knowing which Mathematics route will be appropriately challenging given your career aspirations – Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretations.

Week 3:

Sciences
The other requirement that all students must fulfil when undertaking the IBDP is that of the Sciences. At Whitgift’s Pre-IB course, students will look at Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

In their final week, students will unearth concepts, theories, models, and techniques that support these subject areas – from atoms and cells to electricity and gravitation. This will be done by developing students’ understanding of the scientific method, which in turn will support future Science investigative coursework
